Canine lacrimal and third eyelid superficial glands’ macroscopic and morphometric characteristics Ciência Rural
Cabral,Vânia Pais; Laus,José Luiz; Dagli,Maria Lúcia Zaidan; Pereira,Gener Tadeu; Talieri,Ivia Carmem; Monteiro,Eduardo Raposo; Mamede,Fabrício Villela.
The lacrimal and third eyelid superficial glands produce the aqueous component of the preocular tear film. In this research, morphologic and morphometric assessments of the parenchyma and stroma of both lacrimal glands of healthy adult mongrel dogs were performed. Both lacrimal and third eyelid glands of fourteen dogs were collected, summing fifty-six samples. The macroscopic and morphometric data were statistically analyzed, according to the glandular type (lacrimal and third eyelid superficial glands) and sexual dimorphism (male or female). The lacrimal glands were significantly larger and longer than the superficial glands of the third eyelid. Expressive morphometric differences of interlobular duct, lymphocytic infiltration, interlobular vessels and...

Environmental risk factors related to the development of canine non-Hodgkin's lymphoma Ciência Rural
Zanini,Danielle Almeida; Kimura,Katia Cristina; Nishiya,Adriana Tomoko; Ubukata,Rodrigo; Leandro,Rafael Magdanelo; Brito,Claudia Prado de; Trombetti,Márcia; Lagoa,Ana Carolina; Macedo,Thais Rodrigues; Rodrigues,Lucas Campos de Sá; Rosendo,Janaína Aparecida da Silva; Arndt,Helen Lyrio; Dias,Ricardo Augusto; Dagli,Maria Lúcia Zaidan.
This research aimed to investigate the possible risk factors associated with the development of canine non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Owners of 83 dogs with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and of 84 healthy dogs answered an epidemiological questionnaire. Dogs who lived outside of the house and within 100 meters of busy streets or avenues (defined as more than 50 vehicles per minute) had a higher risk for developing the disease (OR: 3.1, 95% CI: 1.4-6.9, P=0.005). These results suggest that air pollution derived from vehicle traffic may be associated with the development of canine non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Inhibition of ascitic ehrlich tumor cell growth by intraperitoneal injection of Pfaffia paniculata (Brazilian ginseng) butanolic residue BABT
Vieira,Juliana; Matsuzaki,Patricia; Nagamine,Márcia Kazumi; Haraguchi,Mitsue; Akisue,Gokithi; Gorniak,Silvana Lima; Dagli,Maria Lúcia Zaidan.
This study aimed to investigate the effects of the administration of butanolic residue (BR) of Pfaffia paniculata by intraperitoneal route to Ehrlich ascitis tumor bearing mice. Initially, a toxicity study of P. paniculata BR was performed in which doses of 12.5; 25 and 50mg/Kg were administered by intraperitoneal injection for seven days to Swiss mice. The treatment did not show toxicity. Then, Swiss male mice received, by intraperitoneal injection, once a day, 12.5; 25 or 50mg/Kg of P. paniculata BR for seven days. This protocol started in the same day of tumor inoculation with 5X10(6) cells i.p. The treatment with butanolic residue of P.paniculata i.p caused a significant increase in the ascitic volume; however, a significant decrease in tumor cells...

Sewage sludge does not induce genotoxicity and carcinogenesis Genet. Mol. Biol.
Silva,Paula Regina Pereira; Barbisan,Luis Fernando; Dagli,Maria Lúcia Zaidan; Saldiva,Paulo Hilário Nascimento.
Through a series of experiments, the genotoxic/mutagenic and carcinogenic potential of sewage sludge was assessed. Male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to four groups: Group 1 - negative control; Group 2 - liver carcinogenesis initiated by diethylnitrosamine (DEN; 200 mg/kg i.p.); Group 3 and G4- liver carcinogenesis initiated by DEN and fed 10,000 ppm or 50,000 ppm of sewage sludge. The animals were submitted to a 70% partial hepatectomy at the 3rd week. Livers were processed for routine histological analysis and immunohistochemistry, in order to detect glutathione S-transferase positive altered hepatocyte foci (GST-P+ AHF). Peripheral blood samples for the comet assay were obtained from the periorbital plexus immediately prior to sacrificing....
